March event announced for the Live Poets evening at Don Bank

Live Poets @ Don Bank is a montly evening of poetry, discussion and ideas and is held at the historical cottage of Don Bank at 6 Napier st, North Sydney. Their latest event will be taking place at 7pm on 23 March 2011.

Performing at the March event:

OMAR MUSA is a hip hop artist and spoken word performer and won the 2008 Australian Poetry Slam. He's performed overseas and recorded with hip hop artists in the USA.On March 23rd he will perform material from his latest cd: World Goes to Pieces. Omar is an experienced and dynamic performer who's sure to compel interest.

MARY TANG by contrast doesn't draw attention to herself but has forged a life of courage. This despite being adopted out, unwanted, by her parents and later suffering bouts of cancer. Under William Yang's direction she has written and performed in the productions: Stories East and West at Parramatta Riverside and Belvoir St and Cool-ie for the Chinese New Year Festival. She has also been invited to a  residency at a writers retreat in the US. She lives in Cremorne and has worked as a Calligraphy teacher

About Life Poets @Don Bank:

Like most poetry and associated venues Live Poets @ Don Bank has an Open Section where anyone is welcome to recite, sing, tell a story or play an instrument. Or do a combination of these things! The length of time available is limited by how many people want to participate but generally 2 to 3 minutes a person is standard. Normally there are 3 or 4 Open Section people before the first guest appears.
Supper is served in the courtyard and is a great opportunity for people to reconnect with old friends or make new ones.The Open Section continues after supper. The $7 cost for entry helps to pay the Special Guests and includes supper and drinks.

Boree Log Award for Bush Verse competition

Are you a poet or a bush verse writer, or do you know one? Then you'll probably want to enter the Eastwood Hills Fellowship of Australian Writers'  Boree Log Award for Bush Verse competition.

Australian Bush Poetry or Verse is defined by the Australian Bush Poets Association as "poetry having good rhyme and meter, written about Australia, Australians and the Australian way of life."

So if you want to submit a traditional rhyming bush verse (80 lines maximum) for your chance to $100 and a trophy, as well as connecting with community of like-minded poets, then head over to the Eastwood Hills Fellowship of Australian Writers' to enter here.

Performance poet Tug Dumbly performing at Live Poets@Don Bank

If you live in Sydney, love poetry or have been keen to check out performance poetry for a while, why not head to Don Bank on Wedneday evening the 23rd of February to see Australia's most popular Performance Poet TUG DUMBLY present his satirical monologue?

Tug is also known internationally having appeared at venues and festivals in New York, Montreal, London and Edinburgh. Locally Tug has presented The Tug Report for ABC Radio, had 2 ABC CDs released: Junk Culture Lullabies and Idiom Savant, has twice won the Banjo Paterson Prize for comic verse, won the Nimbin World Performance Poetry Cup in 2010 and the Spirit of Woodford storytelling comp 2010/11.
 
Tug will be interviewed about his work on stage and in schools before his performance.
 
There will also be the usual Open Section where anyone is welcome to recite, sing, tell a story or play an instrument.

“The country comes to the city” with Live Poets @ Don Bank

For those of you who love poetry and live over on the north side of Sydney, there is a new event on at Don Bank next Wednesday, the 24th of November for the annual presentation of the UnDarwin Awards..
 
Jim Low will be launching his new folk album Above the Creek Bed and he will be followed by bush poet and social satirist Brian Bell, who will regale attendees with the country take on contemporary society.

As always, there will be the $7 supper, drinks and an open section for anyone who wishes to recite, sing or play an instrument or tell a story – with the loose theme of “Poems of Your Blood’s Country”.

Sydney-siders: Interactive poetry night with Nur Alam

If you love poetry and live in Sydney, what are you up to on the evening of Wednesday 27 October? Live Poets is on again at at the Don Bank Museum in North Sydney, where Australian poet Nur Alam will read from her book of poems “Forty Pieces – plus/minus” and talk about her work.
Later in the night Gilmar Munoz and Juan Medellin will be performing Spanish guitar pieces and there will even be an Open Section for anyone who wants to recite, sing, tell a story or even play and instrument.

More info on Nur Alam:
Nur Alam was born in Fiji of Indian parents and migrated to Australia
in 1963. Her work career included being Head of Training and Development, Customer
Services division, of Westpac Financial Services. She was made a member of
International Who's Who in 2000. At the present she is President of Auburn
Community Development Network, and has performed with Auburn Poets and Writers Group at 4 successive Sydney Writers Festivals since 2007.
Her work has been widely published in anthologies and magazines.
She is currently studying playwriting and is the convenor of APWG at its monthly meetings.
