VALERIE KHOO WRITES:
I was working up a sweat in a class at my gym the other day when I happened to turn around and face the back of the studio. I almost stopped dead in my tracks. Why? Because of the giant words that were emblazoned across the wall. Here is a picture.
Do you know what's wrong with this picture? There's a comma crime going on. An over zealous comma fan has used a comma where it shouldn't be. The sentence should simply read:
"Endurance wasn't built in a day." With no comma.
There can be many reasons to use a comma in a sentence. This is not one of them.
Why anyone would use a comma in that sentence defies explanation. I can only imagine they have been brought up to be generous with punctuation. But, sometimes, less is more. And, at other times, inserting a comma where it doesn't belong is just wrong, wrong, wrong!
